Important Details for Towing Your Electric Vehicle

Posted: January 21, 2020

Driving down the road, you notice something is wrong with your car and shortly after it halts to a sudden stop. You can’t go anywhere! You need to call a tow truck company but there is something different about your vehicle than most; it is electric. What do you do now? Can you still call a tow company for an electric-powered car? Yes, but you need to be aware of some things first.

Charging Station

Instead of getting your tow truck driver to take you to the nearest mechanic shop, you will need to get driven to a charging station where you can plug in your car, so it can gear up to restart. Of course, if the problem is more complicated than just a low battery, you may still need a shop to look at your vehicle.

How long will it take to charge your vehicle? It depends on the amount of battery life you have left and the speed of the charging station. What is another option? You can ask your towing company if they can bring a charging truck to your location. This allows you to charge your car wherever you are but not all tow truck companies have these types of trucks.

Flatbed Tow Truck

You will need to make sure the tow truck company you call provides you with a flatbed tow truck. Why? Since your vehicle is electric, it might not have a neutral position and in this case, will just roll off the back of any other kind of tow truck. This can result in disaster and damage to your car. A flatbed truck will allow your vehicle to be towed without any part of it hitting the ground.

Why would you need to get your electric vehicle towed?

Just as with a regular fuel-driven or diesel-powered vehicle, your electric vehicle might need a tow for some of the very same reasons. What are a few of these reasons?

Brake Issues

After driving your electric vehicle for some time, you notice the brakes start to sound a little odd and suddenly you are faced with the issue of them needing repair. You can’t drive any further due to this problem and need a tow. Your brakes might need to be repaired or perhaps replaced completely because, over time, the rotors and pads wear down.

Flat Tire

Does your car sound a little bit funny as you drive down the road? You might have a flat tire and if this is the case, it is best to pull over to the side of the roadway and call for a tow truck. A flat tire can happen for many reasons, some of which being you have run over a nail and punctured a hole in your tire or you have collided with an object that has allowed the air to drain out of your once perfectly inflated tire.

Electric vehicles are great at saving you on fuel costs and keeping pollution out of the environment, but you need to be careful to note what type of tow you need and what your unique electric vehicle could require differently than other vehicles.
